Raised in a family with a storied history of serving in either the Imperial Navy or working for Gutamaya, Sommerville's young self was no stranger to the intricacies of the Empire - an instilled sense of discipline, honor, and duty grew to represent him much as they did his predecessors before, visible in all facets of life. Tutored to be a model citizen, and only further pushed on by both his parents to study every aspect of the Empire's past and present, he spent many weeks traveling across the Empire to locations of the highest cultural and historical importance, from Summerland, to Achenar.

Not unlike many in his generation, thus came to be a man well aware of the lapses of Imperial rule - and set on forging his future in such one way that he'd see eye to eye and shoulder to shoulder with anyone sharing his vision; so offered Princess Aisling, too - a future without slavery, with the working man heard and followed, and with the Empire's banner flying higher in face of an increasingly antagonistic Federation.

Following in his forebearer’s footsteps all the same, he chose a career in the Imperial Navy. Voluntarily forgoing the expedited ascent through the ranks his surname would have afforded him, he’d spend several years on station near Cubeo before being tasked, in late 3309, with overseeing a construction project near the Federation frontier. His baptism of fire came shortly thereafter, when warships belonging to Jerome Archer made an appearance; though victorious in the end, the price was steep, both in lives and materials. Service in the Imperial Navy also meant the forging of new friendships, with adjutant Gauthier, a Lieutenant in the Imperial Naval Infantry, becoming a close confidant of his, with whom he'd share many conversations and thoughts about affairs back at home.

Having returned from his posting at the border, time and attention remain delegated towards personal initiatives, with the foremost priority being helping out - where possible - the various planetside groups that have sworn to take the battle beyond Cubeo's near reaches against the practice of slavery. Tensions near Chi Eridani, however, with accusations of Imperial meddling launched by Jerome Archer, threaten to put an end to his ambitions for the foreseeable future.
