Commander Solomon Alcubierre:

Solomon Alcubierre, Born April 4th, 3261 as the youngest child of five to Helena and Marcus Alcubierre. The last name is what largely defines Solomon, as his ancestor, Miguel Alcubierre dreamed up the first warp field drive. After Miguel's death, his nieces, nephews, and some of his children worked to refine his calculations, in particular Lorenzo Alcubierre, his son. He involved himself with propulsion projects during the years after the nuclear war on Earth that devastated the environment. The need for a new home from a crowded and wounded earth led him to Mars, and his four children, to senior research positions in Sirius corp. after Lorenzo had retired and settled down on Mars.

The Alcubierre family inundated themselves in the initial development of the FTL drives, after having used their political connections and lawyers to patent the Alcubierre field. While only entitling them to 2% of profits from the first Sirius corp. frameshift drives (a massive market, but representing only a tiny portion of total Sirus corp. profits, as the FSD market represented between 1 and 4% of their total revenue), they used their proceeds to acquire major stakes in real estate, industry, and stock markets across human space. Sirius corp. had such an early start with FTL travel, that the Alcubierre family were able to amass a significant amount of credits and political power, such that it became galactic law for their patent to carry through(the family says it was through contracts and diplomacy, but canny observers suspect it was through bribes).

With totally predictable results, the family used their wealth to acquire more power, but kept themselves close to the research that had created their wealth in the first place.

Thus the Alcubierre family put themselves into power, where they amassed a galactic fortune and remain minor players in the affairs of Elites across human space.

They maintain political and business ties across human space, from the Empire, to the Federation, and the Alliance. Family members can be found in all levels of government, and as funders and backers for almost every galactic power (with Archon being the exception, because he doesn't pay them, given that he's a pirate.)

The Alcubierres have an internal family culture which is highly meritocratic. The FSD may have unlocked opportunity for humanity unparalleled before, but it's also made warfare possible anywhere, at any time. There are no such thing as front lines, and the casualties from these continual skirmishes are always high. Plus, the material costs of all those lost ships. There lies the terrible irony for the family. Every dead pilot, every lost ship, represents a cost that has to be repayed, which inevitably is. Major wars, powerplay, and piracy swell Alcubierre family bank accounts. They might grow rich off of human prosperity, but their biggest cash infusions come with the deaths of millions in tow.

This fact is not at all lost on the Alcubierres. No. Neither is it exploited for greater profit. In fact, the family has created barriers to the families' wealth for those progeny they consider, "undeserving". Indeed, an Alcubierre can't join the families' wealthiest without having done significant good deeds in the service of an important cause. Alcubierres have mediated against war, brokered alliances, united warring systems, broken the backs of criminal cartels, closed drug and slave markets.

Solomon Alcubierre, the youngest child of a peripheral family member, is by nature, a playboy and a scoundrel. Often not taking the family legacy seriously during his youth, preferring to rely on his smooth tongue and wanton supply of liquor to create his opportunities. But, the ethic of the family weighed more heavily on him as he got older. By his mid 30s, he was thinking about what would honor(and also enrich) himself with his family. Having been a seedy individual who frequented illegal bars in cartel systems, he was nevertheless deeply bothered by the widespread slavery he saw around him. One night, in 3293, I believe it was on a Tuesday, Solomon found himself on one of the worst benders he'd been on in years. If it wasn't for his gene-modified and cybernetically enhanced liver, by all rights he should have died. Instead, he just got so drunk, that he paid a pirate crew to mutiny against their captain, and stole 600 slaves before flying one his father's Imperial Cutters (his chrome one, dad was pissed) smack into the side of Gorbachev station with the entire crew laden aboard. Due mostly to the massive shield banks of the Cutter, and possibly some dumb luck considering how drunk and high Alcubierre was. As the bruised ship finally engaged its magnetic docking legs on the platform, and the massive cloud of space weed smoke billowed from the cabin, Solomon stumbled out, along with the 600 freed men, women, and children.

Apparently because it had taken Solomon two hours to finally park the ship once he'd arrived at Gorbachev station, his father received a call that his son was trying to park his ship, flew from 10 systems away, landed (while his son was grinding the paint on the outer shell of the station), had a cup of tea and a sandwich, took what must have been a satisfying dump, and come back to meet his son at the platform.

Solomon, still raving drunk at this point, got three things that day. An earful. A repair bill for the Cutter and the Station. And the most sincerest praise his father had ever given him.

Indeed, while Solomon only moderately lowered his drinking after the events in that slaver station, the rush and thrill he got from freeing those people stuck with him. He could use his position and wealth to free other human beings from literal bondage. Years later, he joined a very principled man who strongly disapproved of his language and drinking, Mr. Corwin Ryan. But Ryan knew the measure of a man, and this drunken, high goof was a serious abolitionist. Willing to put his money, his power, his connections, and even his life on the line to end the foul institution.

Unconfirmed rumors have Solomon attempting a back-door deal with the Federation to put Aisling Duval in the seat of Emperor (forever ending the practice of Imperial Slavery), but a paranoid Federation leader is reported to have fucked that one up. Of course, these are all just rumors, but Alcubierre has been recorded on video with his head on a table, drunk as a skunk, saying, "Ffffffffeck uuuuuu Perrrthh u muh-muthh-mother[CENSORED]. W-we could haff saved billionzzz you dumb c[CENSORED]t!"
