Conventional Vambrace
[Lightweight Armor]

The standard vambrace is a light guard for the forearm that works in conjunction with armors worn by the user. It is crafted from a variety of materials including leathers or synthetic polymers. Commonly it is lined with smart fabrics that allow power to reach any wrist-mounted computer displays or tracker lights. Mercenaries are encouraged to extend the protection of their jackets with a vambrace like this one as armors tend to dedicate their focus on protecting the torso rather than the arms.

Thermal Sword
Melee Thermal Weapon

[See NOTE for abilities]

Biography:

Well, I grew up on one of those common back-of-beyond worlds. Pretty sure it was in an independent sector. For all I know, it still is. You probably never heard of the settlement before, though. I heard it was razed to the ground by pirates a few years after I left. I was impatient to get out of there. Sure, I cared about what was left of my family.. What hadn't been taken out by raids, radiation, or diseases. But, I was sick of it all. I needed to be as far from that Godforsaken place as I could get. So, I stowed away on a ship that came through looking to refuel and trade, and never looked back.

It took some time, being an illegal stowaway - no papers, no ID - to get established out in the greater galaxy. I spent a few years in the system as a minor before I was granted any kind of proof that I existed. By then, I was basically an adult, and could go my own way no matter what, but I was trapped in the settlement without anything more meaningful to prove my right to come and go.

I was eager to start making a name for myself, so I signed on with the local military as soon as I heard they could provide the necessary ID and training to put my goals in motion. I ended up assigned to Major Vance Hartjen's unit, Hartjen's Hounds. It was one of those loosely defined alliance outfits. Major Hartjen used his sanctioned privileges to take on legal merc work to add to his unit's funding. As a result, we were decently paid. Which was good. While we were provided some pretty solid gear, we were recommended to individualize our equipment as much as possible. The goal was to get us out of the unit armory ASAP. They were big on independent thought, and unit tactics. Strange dichotomy, right? Somehow it worked really well. I was given training as a sharpshooter and scout. I learned a good deal about field repairs, and how to spot a reliable rifle when I saw one.

I learned later that I'd entered into a contracted term of service. If I'd tried to leave, I'd have been shot as a deserter. When I first enlisted, I was given the impression that was my only way to get my ID. Maybe it was true. Maybe it was a trick to get me to enlist. I had to work for a set number of years, or pay off a surprisingly large debt to be cut loose. So... What the hell, I thought. I started volunteering for anything that would earn me some extra creds. I also learned I could get started working on my pilot's certs. But, that too came with a steep cost.

Fast forward a few years, and I finally bought my freedom from military service. I had my ID, my pilot's cert, and a small amount of creds in my pocket. And it felt good to no longer be under anyone's thumb.

For a while, I flew around taking odd jobs to survive. I didn't mind. I was free to chart my own course. While in port at Chamberlain's Rest (yeah, that one. Doesn't everyone rot in that port for a time?), I heard some solid info on the the powers-that-be out beyond the systems I'd been plying. Originally, it was the tech offered to loyalists that drew me to support Aisling Duval. But, I'll admit, her stance on slavery and a few other things really put her on my radar as a potential long term choice.

It took all I had to book a flight on a carrier across the galaxy to Cubeo. I even had to sell most of the gear I'd built up while working under Major Hartjen. Still, I made it to Cubeo, where my real adventures began. I haven't decided yet whether or not to sign on officially. Right now, I'm content to see if it's really the best fit for me or not and to do so as an independent contractor. Sure, it comes with considerable risks and limitations. But, what in this universe doesn't?

I prefer the hinterlands far more than the overcrowded bubble. I'll help out from time to time to ensure the empire's growth and stability in what little ways I can, sure. but, I prefer the freedom of exploring the less travelled systems, and further still, into the completely unknown. If I had no choice but to choose one or the other, I'd go with exploring as far from mainstream civilization as I could get. With a few visits every so often just to make sure I don't go completely stir-crazy out there.
